Boxing gym in Mauritius: what a muay thai club in Grand Baie offers

If you are looking for a boxing gym in Mauritius and you live or stay in the north, let us start with the honest part: Team Boom is not a Western boxing gym, it is a muay thai club — Thai boxing — on Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers, along the coast from Grand Baie. Hands are a large part of what you learn there, but they are not all of it. Here is what the club actually teaches, what an evening on the mats looks like, who the classes suit, and how to walk in for the first time.

What a muay thai club teaches

Muay thai is the art of eight limbs: fists, feet, knees and elbows, plus the clinch, that upright grappling where you control the other person's posture. A beginner starts exactly where a boxer starts — stance, guard, footwork, the jab, the cross. The difference shows up in the following weeks, when the low kick, the teep, the knee and the clinch get folded into the same combinations. So if you searched for boxing classes because you wanted to hit pads, sweat and learn to hold yourself in front of someone, nothing is lost: the arsenal is simply wider, and there is more to learn.

That breadth is what holds a beginner's attention. There is something new almost every week, which means visible progress for months rather than the slow polishing of three punches. If it is the comparison between the two sports you are after, we wrote it here — this page is about the gym and the classes.

What a class looks like

A session lasts about an hour and is always built the same way: skipping rope, joint mobility, technical work, pad rounds, core work, stretching. The pads are the heart of it — a partner holds the targets, you strike them, and nobody strikes back. That is how you can train hard from your very first evening without taking a single hit.

The club has one rule that matters more than any other for a newcomer: no sparring during the first month, whatever your sporting past. You learn to hold a guard, to place your feet and to control your shots before anyone puts you in front of live opposition. Gloves are lent for your first sessions, training is barefoot, and you bring shorts, a t-shirt and a water bottle. The first-class guide walks through the hour minute by minute.

Who the classes suit

  • Complete beginners. Group B exists for exactly that: people who have never put gloves on.
  • Adults coming back to sport. A round is interval work — short intensity, short recovery, repeat — and the technique occupies your mind while your conditioning catches up.
  • Under-18s, who have their own monthly rate.
  • People who trained elsewhere, in boxing, kickboxing or muay thai, and want to keep going on the island.
  • Those who want to compete. Group A is the advanced and competition slot, with a pathway to the interclubs.

Where the gym is

The gym is on Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers 30522, the village that continues Grand Baie along the north coast. For anyone living in Grand Baie, Pereybère, Trou aux Biches or Cap Malheureux, that is a short evening drive rather than a trip down to Port Louis and back after training. Living close to your gym is not a detail: it is the main reason people are still training in month six. The local picture is set out on our Grand Baie page.

The Chez Boom snack is at the same address, run by the same family, which settles the question of what to eat after an hour on the pads.

Schedule, prices and how to start

Training runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday: group A at 5:45 pm for advanced members and the competition team, group B at 7:00 pm for beginners and intermediates. The club also leaves the gym from time to time — beach sessions and sparring sessions are added to the calendar and announced at the club.

  • Club membership: Rs 1,200, one-time payment, required for group classes.
  • Adult: Rs 1,400 per month.
  • Under-18: Rs 1,000 per month.
  • Private session: Rs 1,500.

Everything, calculator included, is on the pricing page. To see the place, send one WhatsApp message to +230 5981 9849 and come on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday at 7:00 pm. One hour is usually enough to know whether this is the gym you were looking for.
