Doing muay thai on holiday in Grand Baie is an idea that occurs to two kinds of people: those who already train at home and do not want to lose three weeks, and those who have never tried but reckon a trip is the right moment to find out. Both are welcome at Team Boom, on Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers, a few minutes' drive from the centre of Grand Baie.
One thing to do first: write
Let us start with the most important practical point. If you are visiting, message the club on WhatsApp at +230 5981 9849 before you come. Give your dates, your level, what you are after — one session, several, or private coaching. The club replies and sorts it out with you. That is the only step to take: no need to guess at arrangements from a website, the answer arrives by message.
The same goes for experienced practitioners: saying where you train and for how long lets the coach point you to the right slot rather than leaving you to discover the group at random.
The rhythm of the week
Training runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with two slots each evening: group A at 5:45 pm for advanced members and the competition team, group B at 7:00 pm for beginners and intermediates. On a one-week stay that gives three chances; on two weeks, six. That is plenty to hold your conditioning, and plenty to discover the sport if it is your first time.
The club also leaves the gym: beach sessions and sparring sessions are added to the calendar and announced at the club. If one falls during your stay, it is probably the training memory you will take home — we describe here what sand does to your legs.
What to bring
Very little, and nothing that weighs down a suitcase.
- Shorts and a t-shirt — the sports kit you already packed will do.
- A water bottle, filled before you leave: in this climate you sweat more than you expect.
- Your mouthguard and wraps, if you already train. Those are the only two items that cannot be lent.
- Nothing else. The club lends gloves for your first sessions, and training is barefoot.
If the sport is new to you and the urge to continue follows you home, the gear buying order saves you from the classic post-holiday mistakes.
Training in the tropics
A 7:00 pm session in Mauritian heat is not the same session as in an air-conditioned gym in Europe. Drink all day, not only at training. Do not turn up after a full day in the sun without having made up for it. And accept starting carefully: someone used to three rounds of skipping at home may find the first evening rougher than expected. It passes within two or three sessions, the time it takes to acclimatise.
What a session looks like
About an hour, always built the same way: skipping rope, joint mobility, technical work, pad rounds, core work, stretching. Beginners learn the guard, footwork, the jab and the low kick, and hit targets held by a partner — nobody hits them back. The club rule applies to everyone: no sparring during the first month. So if you are here for ten days, training will be technical and physical, not live work. The full detail is in the first-class guide.
Prices and arrangements
The club's prices are public: membership is Rs 1,200 as a one-time payment, the monthly subscription is Rs 1,400 for an adult and Rs 1,000 for an under-18, and a private session is Rs 1,500. Everything is set out on the pricing page. For a short stay the right move stays the same: message WhatsApp on +230 5981 9849 with your dates and the club will answer.
One last useful detail for a visitor: the Chez Boom snack is at the same address, run by the same family. After an hour on the pads in the heat, knowing you can eat on the spot is not a luxury.
