Starting muay thai in Mauritius: your first class

You are looking for beginner muay thai classes in Mauritius and you want to know what a first session looks like before you walk in. Here is the answer, plainly. At Team Boom, your first class lasts about an hour. You sweat, you learn two or three fundamentals, and you leave with a clear picture of what Thai boxing actually is. Nothing more, nothing less.

What to bring

Shorts, a t-shirt, a water bottle. That is the whole list. The club lends gloves for your first sessions — do not buy any gear before you have set foot on the mats. Training is barefoot. Leave the watch and jewellery at home, trim your nails, tie long hair back. Arrive ten minutes early to meet the coach and sort out the paperwork. You do not need to be fit to start. Getting fit is the point.

One more thing worth knowing: a beginner class is full of beginners. Office workers, students, parents, people who have not exercised in years. Nobody arrives ready. If you have been putting off a kickboxing gym in Mauritius because you are worried about the shape you are in, you are exactly the person the class was built for.

The hour, minute by minute

The session opens with skipping rope. Three rounds, at your own pace — if you trip over it, nobody is watching, everyone has been there. Then joint mobility work: neck, shoulders, hips, ankles. Muay thai uses the whole body, so the whole body gets warmed up.

Then the basics. The guard first: how to stand, where your hands go, how to move without crossing your feet. The jab, the simplest and most useful punch there is. The low kick, the signature weapon of Thai boxing. You drill in the air, then on the pads — the big striking shields a partner holds for you. Hitting something real on day one is what separates a combat sport from a fitness class. Nobody hits you back. The hour closes with core work and stretching.

Group A, group B: where you start

Training runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Two slots. Group A at 5:45 pm is for advanced members and the competition team. Group B at 7:00 pm is for beginners and intermediates. So you start in group B, alongside people with one month, six months or two years of practice — all of whom remember their own first class. Moving up to group A is earned, at the coach's call. Beach sessions and sparring sessions are added to the calendar and announced directly at the club.

No sparring in your first month

This is a fixed rule at Team Boom, not a suggestion. During your first month you do not spar. You learn technique, you hit pads and bags, you build your conditioning. Live opposition comes later, supervised, once you can hold a guard and control your shots. The rule protects beginners — and it protects everyone training with them. It is one of the marks of a serious muay thai gym in Mauritius.

Prices, in plain numbers

  • Club membership: Rs 1,200 — one-time payment, required for group classes.
  • Adult subscription: Rs 1,400 per month, on top of the membership.
  • Under-18 subscription: Rs 1,000 per month, on top of the membership.
  • Private session: Rs 1,500, if you would rather progress one-on-one.

No hidden fees, no twelve-month lock-in. You pay the membership once, then your month, and you train three times a week if you want to. Per session, few combat sports in Mauritius come out cheaper.
