Muay thai in Mauritius: a guide to getting started on the island

Muay thai in Mauritius attracts people every year who had never considered a combat sport: adults who want to move differently, teenagers looking for structure, expats who trained elsewhere. This guide answers the questions you ask yourself before walking into a club: what the sport is, what it demands, and how to recognise a place where you can start properly.

What muay thai actually is

Muay thai, or Thai boxing, is the art of eight limbs: you strike with fists, feet, knees and elbows, and you also work the clinch, that upright grappling where you control the other person's posture. That is what sets it apart from Western boxing, which uses only the fists, and from kickboxing, whose arsenal is narrower. For a beginner it mainly means one thing: there is a lot to learn, therefore a lot of intermediate steps and a lot of visible progress in the first months.

The other feature of muay thai is how it is taught. You learn by hitting targets held by a partner — the pads — not by fighting each other. A beginner can therefore train hard, sweat, learn real technique, and never take a hit. Live opposition comes later, once the technique is there.

Why the sport suits the island

Mauritius has a climate with no winter: you can train all year, which makes consistency far easier than elsewhere. Heat and humidity do impose their own discipline — drink before, during and after, and do not turn up dehydrated after a day in the sun. It is the first thing newcomers underestimate, residents and visitors alike.

The island also offers a surface most clubs in the world do not have: sand. Running and striking on unstable ground trains footing, ankles and balance in a way no mat reproduces. At Team Boom these beach sessions are added to the calendar and announced at the club; we explain the point of them in this article.

What to expect from a club

A club where a beginner can start shows a few concrete signs. These are questions worth asking before signing up, wherever you are on the island.

  • Groups split by level. A beginner has no business in an advanced class, and the reverse is just as true.
  • A clear rule on sparring. At Team Boom it is simple: no sparring during the first month. You first learn to hold a guard and control your shots.
  • Identifiable coaching. Knowing who runs the session, and that it is the same person from one time to the next.
  • Published prices, with no costs discovered along the way.
  • Gear lent at the start. Nobody should have to buy gloves before knowing whether they like the sport.

On that last point, the buying order matters: mouthguard first, wraps next, gloves after. The beginner's kit bag lays out the full list and what you should definitely not buy straight away.

Where to train: Team Boom, in the north

Team Boom trains on Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers, on the north coast of the island, a few minutes' drive from Grand Baie. The club is led by a single coach, Jonathan Gabriel, which gives one consistent technical line from session to session.

Training runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday: group A at 5:45 pm for advanced members and the competition team, group B at 7:00 pm for beginners and intermediates. A session lasts about an hour — skipping rope, warm-up, technique, pads, core work. Gloves are lent for your first sessions; you need shorts, a t-shirt and a water bottle. The full run-through is told in the first-class guide.

What it costs, and how to start
