Signing your child up for a combat sport in Mauritius deserves some thought. Parents arrive at Team Boom with the same questions, and they are fair ones: will my child get hit? Will this make them aggressive? Who is watching? Here are the answers, without sugar-coating.
No, your child will not fight on day one
Let us start with the main fear. At Team Boom there is no sparring during the first month — for juniors and adults alike. A beginner learns the guard, footwork, the jab, the low kick. They hit pads and bags, never a classmate. When live work eventually comes, much later, it is supervised by the coach, with protective gear, between partners of comparable size. Every session runs under direct supervision. The club lends gloves; all a child needs is shorts, a t-shirt and a water bottle.
As for aggression: the opposite happens, and every serious Thai boxing club sees it. A child who learns to channel their energy three times a week, in a setting where respect for the partner is rule one, becomes calmer, not more violent. Muay thai punishes indiscipline — it is a sport where you get nowhere without listening.
What the sport actually teaches
Discipline first. Showing up on time, greeting properly, repeating a movement a hundred times without complaint. Then confidence — the particular kind that comes when a child discovers their body can do hard things. It shows up at school, in their posture, in how they speak to adults. Muay thai also teaches losing: fluffing a move in front of the group, trying again, getting it. Few activities teach that as honestly.
And there is the plain physical case. An hour of skipping rope, drills and pad work, three times a week, is a serious answer to screens and sofas. Thai boxing builds coordination, cardio and strength at the age when those foundations are cheapest to build — no machines, no weights, just a child's own body learning to move well.
The youth school
Team Boom does not just admit young members: the club has built a youth school — the école de la relève — a genuine development pathway. Progress is marked by certificate ceremonies, concrete milestones earned in front of the group and the families. The strongest follow the competition route, and it goes far: the club's juniors have stood on international podiums, up to the Muaythai School World Championship. Girls hold their full place in it — our female fighters have won belts. Your daughter is as welcome as your son, and the mats make no distinction.
Schedule, prices, signing up
Training runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Beginners and intermediates train in group B at 7:00 pm; the 5:45 pm group A is for advanced members and competitors, at the coach's discretion. On price:
- Under-18 subscription: Rs 1,000 per month.
- Club membership: Rs 1,200, one-time payment, required for group classes.
- Gloves are lent by the club for the first weeks.
Three coached sessions a week for Rs 1,000 a month: per supervised hour, it is one of the most affordable activities on the island.
How to know if they will like it
There is only one way: a trial class. Bring your child on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday and stay to watch — parents are welcome at the edge of the mats. You will see how the coach talks to the kids, how the group runs, and above all your child's face at the end of the hour. That is usually where the decision makes itself. Message the club on WhatsApp at +230 5981 9849 to set a day — the gym is on Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers.
