Thai boxing in the north of Mauritius: Pointe aux Canonniers, Pereybere, Trou aux Biches, Cap Malheureux

Doing Thai boxing in the north of Mauritius is mostly a logistics question. The north is not a city: it is a string of coastal villages — Pointe aux Canonniers, Grand Baie, Pereybere, Cap Malheureux, Grand Gaube, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches — where you live in one place, work in another, and where an evening session dies the moment it adds a long drive. Team Boom trains on Casse Ghoon Road, Pointe aux Canonniers, and serves as the shared address for all of them.

One gym for the whole north coast

Pointe aux Canonniers sits at the centre of gravity of the region: the village lies between Grand Baie and Mont Choisy, on the same coastal strip as Pereybere to the north-east and Trou aux Biches to the south-west. From most villages in the area you arrive within a few minutes by car, without going through Port Louis or the busier roads of the interior.

That detail decides everything. A sports subscription almost never dies from lack of desire: it dies because the drive is too long on a rainy Tuesday evening. A gym close to home gets used three times a week for years; a gym on the other side of the island gets used for three weeks.

From Grand Baie and Pointe aux Canonniers

These are the closest: the gym is in the neighbourhood, literally a few minutes' drive from the centre of Grand Baie. For residents, training slots into the evening without moving anything else around. The Chez Boom snack occupies the same address, which settles the question of eating before or after.

From Pereybere, Cap Malheureux and Grand Gaube

These northern and north-eastern villages connect to Pointe aux Canonniers along the coast road. The 7:00 pm slot is made for them: it leaves time to get back from work, drop the children off, then come. Plenty of families in the area use both groups — a teenager training, a parent on the same mats. On that subject, our article for parents answers the usual questions about how young people are supervised.

From Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy

A little more road from the western side of the north, but the same logic: you follow the coast and you arrive. For those coming from further out, group A's 5:45 pm slot can be more convenient than 7:00 pm — provided you have the level, since access to that group is the coach's call. Beginners train in group B at 7:00 pm, without exception.

The schedule suits the north

Training runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Group A at 5:45 pm for advanced members and the competition team; group B at 7:00 pm for beginners and intermediates. Beach sessions and sparring sessions are added to the calendar and announced at the club — the north coast lends itself to it, and sand works your footing in a way no mat can.

The club is led by a single coach, Jonathan Gabriel. That means one consistent technical line from session to session, and someone who knows your name by the second week. The club rule is clear: no sparring during the first month. You learn the guard, the footwork, the jab, the low kick, you hit pads and bags, and nobody hits you back. Gloves are lent for your first sessions; shorts, a t-shirt and a water bottle are enough. The full run-through of a first hour is described in our first-class guide.
